When should you use a waterproofing membrane?

In general, you should always use a waterproofing membrane in any application where the intent is to keep water from penetrating into the substrate and eventually into ancillary spaces. These would include, but are not limited to, showers, bathrooms, steam rooms, swimming pools, spas, fountains, commercial kitchens, food preparation areas, and more… kitchen, wet/submerged area before tiling. LATICRETE® HYDRO BAN® XP, LATICRETE HYDRO BAN, LATICRETE HYDRO BAN Quick Cure, LATICRETE HYDRO BAN Sheet Membrane, LATICRETE HYDRO BAN Cementitious Waterproofing Membrane, LATICRETE 9235 Waterproofing Membrane, or LATICRETE HYDRO BARRIER™ Plus are ideal based on the suitability of the membrane for a particular application. For more information, please refer to the specific membrane product data sheet below or call LATICRETE Technical Services at 1.800.243.4788 x1235.

How do I install HYDRO BAN®?

HYDRO BAN® is a cold-applied, liquid rubber polymer which is applied with a paint roller, paint brush or airless paint sprayer. No membrane reinforcing fabric is typically required. The first liquid coat must be completely dry to the touch prior to applying the second coat of membrane liquid. HYDRO BAN will change from a sage green color to an olive green color when dry. The second liquid coat can then be applied and must also dry to the touch. A LATICRETE latex-fortified thin-set (e.g. 257 Titanium, 254 Platinum, etc...) may be used to install most types of tile or stone directly to the HYDRO BAN. Please refer to the HYDRO BAN data sheet and HYDRO BAN Installation Instructions for more complete information. Please read the installation instructions for the complete information on how to properly prepare the substrate and install HYDRO BAN.

How do I install HYDRO BAN® Quick Cure?

HYDRO BAN® Quick Cure is a rapid, thin, liquid applied ready-to-use waterproofing membrane that is ANSI A118.10 compliant. For most applications, apply a 6 mil coat of HYDRO BAN Quick Cure liquid with brush or roller over substrate including pre-treated areas. Flash membrane up over pre-treated coves and corners, so such areas have two layers of HYDRO BAN Quick Cure liquid. Let dry 15 to 20 minutes at 70°F (21°C) and 50% RH. Apply another 6 mil coat of HYDRO BAN Quick Cure liquid over entire surface to seal membrane. When last coat has dried 15 to 20 minutes, inspect final surface for pinholes, voids, thin spots or other defects. Please read the installation instructions on the product data sheet for the complete information on how to properly prepare the substrate and install HYDRO BAN Quick Cure based on substrate type and application.

How long can I leave a LATICRETE® membrane exposed before covering it?

HYDRO BAN®, 9235 Waterproofing Membrane, HYDRO BAN Quick Cure, HYDRO BAN Cementitious Waterproofing and HYDRO BARRIER™ must be covered by tile, stone, or other suitable finish material within 30 days. However, if the finish material is not yet available for installation, a skim coat of a latex fortified thin-set (e.g. 257 Titanium, 254 Platinum, etc...) will help protect the installation until the veneer finish material is available. The installation of the tile, stone or other suitable material can take place onto the hardened skim coat.

HYDRO BAN Sheet Membrane has no restrictions for exposure time but must be protected from excessive foot traffic, wheeled equipment, and other trades by using up to 3/4" (19mm) thick plywood or OSB protection over non-staining kraft paper.

How do I treat the drains when using a LATICRETE® Waterproofing Membrane?

You should use a 2-part clamping ring style drain (per ASME 112.6.3), a HYDRO BAN® Linear Drain or a HYDRO BAN Bonding Flange Drain.

For a 2-part clamping ring assembly, HYDRO BAN®, 9235 Waterproofing Membrane, HYDRO BARRIER, or HYDRO BAN Sheet Membrane must be installed down into the drain assembly and clamped down between the clamping ring of the drain. Once the waterproofing membrane is dry to the touch, use LATASIL™ and put a continuous bead of sealant between the waterproofing membrane and the clamping ring before bolting down the clamping ring.

When using a LATICRETE Linear Drain, apply the HYDRO BAN, 9235 Waterproofing Membrane or HYDRO BARRIER onto the top flange of the HYDRO BAN Linear Drain to maintain continuity of the waterproofing from the mortar bed or HYDRO BAN Pre-Sloped Linear Shower Pan onto the drain flange. When using HYDRO BAN Sheet Membrane with a HYDRO BAN Linear Drain, apply two coats of HYDRO BAN to the top flange of the HYDRO BAN Linear Drain and allow to dry. When the HYDRO BAN is dry, install the HYDRO BAN Sheet Membrane from the mortar bed or HYDRO BAN Pre-Sloped Linear Shower Pan onto the drain flange.

When using a LATICRETE Bonding Flange Drain, apply the HYDRO BAN, 9235 Waterproofing Membrane or HYDRO BARRIER onto the top flange of the HYDRO BAN Linear Drain to maintain continuity of the waterproofing from the mortar bed or HYDRO BAN Pre-Sloped Linear Shower Pan onto the drain flange.

Can I install vinyl tile over HYDRO BAN®, 9235 Waterproofing Membrane, HYDRO BAN Quick Cure, or HYDRO BARRIER™?

Yes - after the HYDRO BAN®, 9235 Waterproofing Membrane, HYDRO BAN Quick Cure, HYDRO BARRIER™ is installed and allowed to dry, use a latex based vinyl adhesive to adhere the vinyl tile to the membrane. Ensure that the adhesive contains no solvents. If there is a question as to the compatibility of the vinyl adhesive and the membrane, apply a continuous 1/8" (3mm) thick coating of a LATICRETE liquid latex thin-set mortar (e.g. 257 Titanium, 254 Platinum, etc...) to the membrane and allow to harden. Then install the vinyl flooring.

Can I install HYDRO BAN®, 9235 Waterproofing Membrane, HYDRO BAN Quick Cure, HYDRO BARRIER™, HYDRO BAN Cementitious Waterproofing, or HYDRO BAN Sheet Membrane directly over plywood in exterior applications?

No! HYDRO BAN®, 9235 Waterproofing Membrane, HYDRO BAN Quick Cure, HYDRO BARRIER™, HYDRO BAN Cementitious Waterproofing, and HYDRO BAN Sheet Membrane are not intended for this installation. The LATICRETE Plaza and Deck System must be used for this type of installation.

When can I install tile over HYDRO BAN®, 9235 Waterproofing Membrane, HYDRO BAN Quick Cure, HYDRO BARRIER™, HYDRO BAN Cementitious Waterproofing, or HYDRO BAN Sheet Membrane?

When using HYDRO BAN®, 9235 Waterproofing Membrane or HYDRO BARRIER™, tile can be installed as soon as the final liquid coat is completely dry to the touch.  When using HYDRO BAN Sheet Membrane, tile can be installed as soon as it is installed.  However, use caution when moving on a floor with freshly installed HYDRO BAN Sheet Membrane so as not to cause movement of the membrane.

If flood testing is required for the installation, please refer to the FAQ listed above for flood testing the LATICRETE membrane being used;
