FAQs - Common Questions We Get Asked
- Is waterproofing membrane necessary?
If you are concerned about water penetration and leaks which can damage property or go places where water is not intended to be then the use of a waterproofing membrane is a very good idea. Many LATICRETE® waterproofing membranes also have anti-fracture capabilities to help prevent the transfer of cracks in the substrate from transferring through the tile or stone and meet or exceed the requirements of ANSI A118.10 and ANSI A118.12. - When should you use waterproofing membrane?
In general, you should always use a waterproofing membrane in any application where the intent is to keep water from penetrating into the substrate and eventually into ancillary spaces. These would include, but are not limited to, showers, bathrooms, steam rooms, swimming pools, spas, fountains, commercial kitchens, food preparation areas, kitchens and more. We have several products that are ideal based on the suitability of the membrane for a particular application such as: HYDRO BAN® XP, HYDRO BAN, HYDRO BAN Quick Cure, HYDRO BAN Sheet Membrane, HYDRO BAN Cementitious Waterproofing Membrane, 9235 Waterproofing Membrane or HYDRO BARRIER™ Plus. For more information, refer to the specific membrane product data sheet. - Can you tile over waterproof membrane?
Yes, if the waterproofing membrane is manufactured specifically to accept tile, stone or other adhered veneer. LATICRETE® waterproofing membranes are manufactured for such applications on a wide variety of applications over a multitude of substrates. These membranes include HYDRO BAN® XP, HYDRO BAN, HYDRO BAN Quick Cure, HYDRO BAN Sheet Membrane, HYDRO BAN Cementitious Waterproofing Membrane, 9235 Waterproofing Membrane, or HYDRO BARRIER™ Plus. Tile can be installed over these membranes using an ANSI A118.4, ANSI A118.15 or ANSI A118.3 adhesive. Please refer to the data sheet for a specific membrane for more specific information.
