If the cement-based mortar is fresh and soft, simply use a damp sponge or towel and wipe the mortar from the face of the tile. Make sure all traces of residue are removed. If the cement-based mortar is hard, dampen the mortar with water and allow to soak in for a few minutes. Using a plastic scraper, try to scrape the mortar from the face of the tile being careful not to damage the tile. Repeat as necessary until you get close to the tile surface. When only a thin residue is left, use a damp sponge or white scrub pad to loosen the remaining mortar and wipe off with a clean towel or sponge. If an epoxy adhesive was used, it is essential to remove the adhesive mortar from the surface while it is still fresh and wet as it will be almost impossible to remove it after it dries.
